The 2022 SHSMD conference #SHSMD22 showcased great speakers who shared a lot of tweetable knowledge – aka “knowledge nuggets”. There was everything from inspirational quotes to incredible success stories, triumphs of determination to solemn reflections on our society. As an attendee it made me think.
Here are a selection of quotes and tweets that will give you a flavor of what happened over the 3 days of SHSMD22.
Opening Keynote by Suneel Gupta
Suneel Gupta delivered the opening keynote at SHSMD22. His gave an inspiring talk about failure, courage, and being open to help from others. It was the perfect way to start this year’s conference.
“Long term success comes from short term embarrassment. You have to learn to get others on board with your ideas. To sell to your team, your bosses, to get the right people on board” @suneel #shsmd22 pic.twitter.com/el3YWir5V4

Session Insights
There were too many breakout sessions at SHSMD22 to choose from – a sign that the program organizers picked the right topics and presenters. My favorite was Jessica Walker’s. Not only did she share practical advice on the patient journey, but she also brought her trademark positive energy to the morning session.
Enjoying the energy and information from @JWalker_HC session. Not surprising… the more time it takes to book/confirm an appt, the lower the conversion rate. @Care_Sherpa_HC #SHSMD22 #HITMC pic.twitter.com/SmJsWY1OZ7

Closing Keynote on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Healthcare by Alan K Nevel
The closing keynote was a personal highlight. Alan K Nevel, SVP and Chief Equity Officer at The MetroHealth System in Cleveland OH, gave an earnest and heart-felt presentation of the diversity, equity & inclusion (DE&I) initiatives he has been part of. One video in particular that he shared was especially heart-wrenching – about an African-American volunteer who was turned away by a family because of the color of his skin. It was powerful and eye-opening.
You can see that video and more on the special “Healing Begins with Listening” page on the MetroHealth website: https://www.metrohealth.org/racial-equity/healing-begins-with-listening
“To address inequity we need to create a movement, not a moment.” @AlanKNevel #SHSMD22
